Art and technological expert review
May 10, 2003
The object of analysis by experts is the work of fine art, the painting "The Robe of power"
(53 x 80 mm; canvas, tempera, acrylic, author Vasily Smelyanskiy, picturesque recipe - E. Ushkareva) performed in the author's technique of "Virzhi" - Virtual Painting (author's term).
The author has developed an original method of graphic poetry plastics, based on the translation of forming principles of poetic text into fine practice. The methods of modular and color approach in pictorial images, allowed the author to create the process of the painting by correctly create and apply computer technologies on the stages of composition and color search. Technological features of acrylic paint - high pastosity (hiding), color locality, intense formation of the firm film of the paint layer (drying) - contributed to the proper combination of the picturesque and computer technologies in the process of the painting. The use of tempera paints, making subtle color and tonal gradations, increases the coloristic qualities of work, forming a stable color structure of the work. In this aspect, the use of the term "Virzhi" as typologically defining is seem to be right.
The aesthetic advantages of this work are: original art intention, according to which, the image is the result of the optical connection of color "pixels" in recipient's perception; expression and integrity of color palette based on the visual rhythm of color vibrations of warm and cold background and the central figure relations; activation of plastic features' reading process based on comparison of collage semantically different text passages, forming a new semantic context.
The following conclusion can be inferred above:
Submitted for examination artwork by Vasily Smelyanskiy is an example of the original author's approach to a process of art practice and reflects the current trends in contemporary art - inclination to the synthesis of innovative and traditional art technology, has high art and aesthetic value, which meets all the requirements of traditional painting techniques (adherence to the principle of "underpainting - the cut-off gasket - coloristic writing "). The use of classic paints based on organic pigments in pictorial practice by the author ensures longevity and durability of the paint layer picture.
